EBRA welcomes the publication of the Battery Regulation

The new battery regulation was published on 28 July 2023 in the Official Journal of the European Union.

EBRA welcomes this new regulation promoting the sustainability and circularity of a European supply chain to an unseen level with ambitious goals and targets.

All economic actors involved in the batteries supply chain and in the management of their end-of-life have their own set of responsibilities, but chiefly opportunities, for making it a success.

The new regulatory text innovates on several points:

  • in the definitions of new requirements and targets,

  • by allowing the possibility for the regulator to take adaptive market measures,

  • enhance information sharing among the actors,

  • and increase the credibility of the reported actions and targets.

Last but not least, the new regulation provides certainty for actors involved in 2nd life, sorting, and recycling, to proceed with their necessary investments for implementing this regulation.

EBRA would like to thank all the people form the EU Commission, the Council and the European Parliament, as well as all stakeholders for their hard work in crafting this regulation.  At the same time, EBRA calls for completing the remaining work, in particular, regarding certain guidance and methodologies for calculating and reporting the new targets.

The concepts embedded in this new regulation shall pave the way when revising other directives, like the WEEE directive and the ELV directive, just to name a few.
